TitleOpposing Viewpoints in Context

Developer: Gale Cengage Learning

Genre: Database

Reading Level/Interest Age: 15 and up

Plot: Just as the title says, this online database stores the opposing viewpoints of today’s most popular social issues. Students who are in need of information from both sides of the argument can find all that and much more. Other features from this database include, topic overviews, biographies of social activists and reformers, overviews of court-cases, periodical articles, charts and graphs, and podcasts.

Critical Evaluation: Every social issue is very well organized and provides detailed information about both sides. After observing the issue of nuclear energy, the reader is introduced first with a basic definition of the topic, and then is leaded to the history and background information about nuclear energy. The language and difficulty level of the writing can be a bit challenging for the average high school student, but this may be because the scientific topic can be hard to grasp for most people. Researchers can then continue down to the opposing viewpoints, which then lead to actual occurrences to prove why nuclear energy is either favorable or unfavorable. In this particular example, there seems to be more of an argument for nuclear energy being unfavorable. Even though this can skew the researcher’s views on the subject, there is still a good amount of information that is provided to the reader in order for him or her to make an informed decision on which side to choose.

Reader’s Annotation: There are always two sides to the story and Opposing Viewpoints in Context helps students understand the entire topic.
